Report: Panthers signing former Buccaneers cornerback Javien Elliott

The Panthers have a taste for Tampa this week. One day after signing former Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, the team added another former Bucs defender. According to a report by Mike Garafolo at NFL Network, Carolina is signing Javien Elliott.

Like first-round pick Brian Burns, Elliott (5-foot-11, 176 pounds) played his college ball at Florida State.

After going undrafted, Tampa picked him up in May of 2016. He has appeared in 36 career NFL games, totaling one interception, two passes defensed and 39 combined tackles.

For what it’s worth, Elliott got an “average” 63.8 grade from Pro Football Focus last season, ranking him No. 71 among qualifying cornerbacks.

Elliott has only started seven games in his career, with five of them coming last season. He will likely compete for snaps at slot cornerback with Corn Elder and Rashaan Gaulden.

Update:

To make room for Elliott on the roster, the team has waived guard Brendan Mahon.
