Report: Panthers rookie Brian Burns had wrist surgery during bye week

Panthers rookie Brian Burns underwent surgery on his right wrist over the bye week, according to Joe Person at the Athletic. The good news is Burns says it was minor and he’s definitely playing this week against the 49ers. The injury came a few weeks ago when Burns slammed his fist onto the turf after deflecting a punt return. Apparently, he was frustrated that he didn’t get an outright block.

While that’s an unfortunate way for any athlete to get injured, Burns’ motor has helped him become one of the top edge rushers in this draft class. Heading into Week 8, Burns ranks No. 1 among all first-round edge defenders in total sacks and quarterback hits (15.5).

Next up, Burns faces a difficult challenge in the 49ers. They have only allowed 1.3 sacks per game on Jimmy Garoppolo, tied with the Raiders for the fourth-fewest in the league this year.
