Report: Panthers re-signing tight end Colin Thompson

The Panthers came out of this weekend’s roster cuts carrying only two tight ends: Ian Thomas and Chris Manhertz. While it’s clear the position will be de-emphasized in offensive coordinator Joe Brady’s scheme, we knew that state of affairs wasn’t going to last long.

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, the team is re-signing tight end Colin Thompson to the 53-man roster. He was cut on Saturday.

Thompson (6-foot-4, 257 pounds) is another Matt Rhule protege who played his college ball at Florida and Temple. In the NFL, he still hasn’t gotten on the field in a regular season game. This will be his fourth year in the league.

As for who Thompson will be replacing among the current 53-man roster, it’s anybody’s guess. For what it’s worth, the team could open up a spot by placing wide receiver Keith Kirkwood on the injured reserve list. He is still recovering from a broken clavicle and is expected to be out at least a couple more weeks.

Update:

The team has confirmed the Thompson signing and Kirkwood has been placed on IR.
