Well, you know what they say about retreads at the quarterback position—if it doesn’t work three times, you gotta go for a fourth!
In his latest piece for The Charlotte Observer, Panthers beat writer Ellis L. Williams runs through Carolina’s biggest needs for what’ll be a very intriguing offseason. Of those needs is, of course, that pesky spot under center—where the Panthers may have a contingency plan for yet another team’s trash.
Williams writes:
“If Carolina does not land a first-round QB, then Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr could be an option, according to a league source.”
A divorce between Carr and the Raiders seems inevitable, especially after the three-time Pro Bowler was benched for the season’s final two games. He was replaced by backup Jarrett Stidham for Las Vegas’ contests against the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs.
Prior to the somewhat puzzling move, Carr led the Raiders to a 6-9 mark through 15 games. He completed 60.8 percent of his passes for 3,522 yards, 24 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
The Panthers, unfortunately, are quite familiar with the recycling process. Carolina has begun each of the past three seasons with a different starting quarterback who they’ve acquired through either free agency or trade (Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield), with each project failing to meet expectations.
Carr will be entering the first season of a three-year, $121.5 million extension in 2023.
