Report: Panthers intend to interview Josh McDaniels

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is drawing interest from the Carolina Panthers for their head coaching opening, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The Panthers want to interview him. They have also interviewed Mike McCarthy twice and will interview Baylor coach Matt Rhule, per NFL Network.

Carolina fired coach Ron Rivera last month after he had a 79–67–1 record in the regular season and a 3-4 record in the postseason with the Panthers. Perry Fewell took over as interim head coach, but doesn’t appear to be in the mix to take the job on a permanent basis.

The biggest question for the Panthers (and their next head coach) is who will play quarterback. Cam Newton’s job security in Carolina seems weak, but their other options on the roster don’t look promising.

McDaniels has served as a head coach in Denver in 2009 and 2010, but has otherwise gained notoriety running the Patriots offense from 2005 to 2008 and 2012 through this season.
