Report: Panthers hire Alabama assistant as new running backs coach

This morning the Panthers announced that 32-year NFL coaching veteran Jim Skipper is retiring from the league. He had served as Carolina’s running backs coach for 15 of the last 17 seasons, helping craft stars out of DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart and Christian McCaffrey. Skipper leaves behind some big shoes to fill.

Apparently, the team already has a replacement lined up. According to a report by Albert Breer at the MMQB, the Panthers have hired Jake Peetz to take Skipper’s place. Peetz spent last season as an offensive analyst for Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama. Before that, he was with the Raiders three years, most recently as quarterbacks coach in 2017.

Peetz has worked plenty on both sides of the ball in his career. He got his first coaching job in 2006 at Santa Barbara City College, working with their safeties as well as strength and conditioning. By the next year, he was USC’s defensive quality control coach.

The Jaguars gave Peetz his first job in the pros – he was a scout/assistant for them from 2008-2012. Peetz has also put in one year with the Redskins as a wide receivers assistant and offensive qualify control coach. This past year was his second stint in Alabama – in 2013 he was a quarterbacks assistant.
