Report: Panthers expected to be in market for a WR ahead of trade deadline

The Panthers may be looking for more help at wide receiver. According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, Carolina is one of several teams expected to be in the receiver market ahead of next week’s trade deadline. Schefter lists Broncos wideout Emmanuel Sanders as one name that could be available.

“There are enough teams expected to be in the wide receiver market in the days leading up to the Oct. 29 trade deadline — including the Panthers, Patriots, Eagles, 49ers and others — and Sanders could be on the block.”

It might seem like the Panthers don’t need another receiver, considering they have two potential No. 1 guys in D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel. However, the receiver group has under-performed as a whole so far this season. Losing Chris Hogan to injured reserve could be another factor in their desire to add more talent at that spot.

Other receivers who are rumored to be on the trading block include A.J. Green of the Bengals. The rest are not in his class.

Trading for a play-maker like Green would make a lot of sense. Remember, the Panthers are pretty much all in on 2019 given their aggressive offseason and decisions to sign players like Gerald McCoy and Bruce Irvin to one-year deals.

Those moves and others have paid off big for the defense, which is phenomenal and looks like an elite unit. However, the offense is stalling too often and falling short of its potential.

Getting Cam Newton back healthy again would no doubt help, but it feels like they need another weapon. Another receiver who can take the top off the defense and is a red-zone threat would open up the field more for guys like Moore, Samuel, Greg Olsen and Christian McCaffrey.
