Report: Panthers bring back safety Tre Boston on 1-year deal

The Panthers have signed safety Tre Boston to a one-year deal, Carolina announced on Thursday. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is worth $3 million.

Boston was originally a fourth-round pick by Carolina in the 2014 NFL draft. He played 42 games for the Panthers over the next three seasons, starting in 16 of them.

He had his moments but Boston was released after the 2016 season. He signed with the Chargers and had a breakout year as a starter, but he didn’t get a long-term contract. So, Boston signed another one-year deal with the Cardinals for 2018.

Boston had another strong season, so it’s somewhat surprising he’s been a free agent for this long.

In any case, Boston will most likely wind up starting at free safety next to Eric Reid. If they don’t want to just hand him the role, then Boston will have to beat out Ross Cockrell and Rashaan Gaulden.
