Report: Packers to promote WR Allen Lazard to 53-man roster

Allen Lazard didn’t have to wait long for a promotion to the Green Bay Packers’ active roster.

According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, the Packers are promoting Lazard from the practice squad to take the roster spot of rookie tight end Jace Sternberger, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday afternoon.

The team cut Lazard on Saturday but brought him back on the practice squad Sunday, opening up the opportunity for a quick call up to the active roster if an injury happened.

Not only did the Packers lose Sternberger, but the offense is currently without rookie receiver Darrius Shepherd, who has missed the last two days of practice while dealing with a hamstring injury.

Lazard lost out to Shepherd for a roster spot despite standing out during the preseason, catching six passes for 114 yards and a touchdown over three games.

Lazard played special teams throughout the preseason and could be on the active 46-man roster on Thursday night in Chicago.
