Report: Packers releasing veteran WR Jake Kumerow

A receiver who caught 12 passes from Aaron Rodgers last season won’t be on the team’s initial 53-man roster.

The Green Bay Packers are releasing veteran receiver Jake Kumerow on Saturday, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

Kumerow played in 19 games for the Packers the last two seasons, catching 20 passes and 322 yards and two scores. He played 328 snaps on offense in Green Bay last season and proved to be a trust-worthy target for Rodgers and a highly effective run blocker for Matt LaFleur’s offense.

It was expected that Kumerow would be one of at least five receivers to make the Packers’ initial roster, but it’s clear GM Brian Gutekunst wants to upgrade the position, possibly with an outside addition.

Kumerow, 28, is a candidate to return on the practice squad. He must first go through waivers.
