Report: Packers passed on submitting bid for Jalen Thompson

The Green Bay Packers weren’t outbid for safety Jalen Thompson in the supplemental draft Wednesday. The team didn’t even submit a bid, according to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network.

Despite liking Thompson as a player, the Packers weren’t willing to use a draft pick and instead wanted to “go hard” after the Washington State safety if he went undrafted, per Pauline.

It wasn’t to be. The Arizona Cardinals used a fifth-round pick to take Thompson. Pauline reports the Houston Texans also submitted a bid in the fifth round.

The Cardinals had a higher draft priority than both the Packers and Texans and were awarded the player.

Thompson made 39 starts during his first three seasons at Washington State but was forced to enter the supplemental draft after the NCAA ruled him ineligible for the 2019 college football season.

The Packers were an intriguing landing spot for Thompson, who has the athleticism and man-to-man coverage ability to impact the passing game as a safety or slot cornerback at the next level. It will be interesting to track the career of Thompson and whoever the Packers select in the fourth or fifth round of next year’s draft.
