Report: Packers not expected to land S Tashaun Gipson

A reunion between safety Tashaun Gipson and Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine probably isn’t in the works.

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers pursued Gipson and wanted to set up a meeting, but the expectation now is that the veteran safety will be signing elsewhere.

Gipson, 28, was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars last week.

The former undrafted free agent intercepted six passes and made the Pro Bowl while playing under Pettine with the Cleveland Browns during the 2014 season. Pettine now coordinates the defense in Green Bay, where the Packers desperately need help at the safety position.

It doesn’t appear as if that marriage of player-coach relationship and team need will get Gipson to Green Bay.

The Packers will have to look elsewhere for a veteran addition at safety, which looks like one of the deepest positions in free agency this offseason. Other options include Earl Thomas, Landon Collins, Adrian Amos, Tre Boston and Lamarcus Joyner.

Gipson, a seven-year pro, has played in 98 career games. He appeared in all 48 games over the last three seasons in Jacksonville, tallying six interceptions and 16 pass breakups. He has 20 career picks.
