Report: Packers not currently planning to trade S Josh Jones

Not all trade requests are answered promptly in the NFL, as Josh Jones is learning the hard way.

The Green Bay Packers have told Jones that they are not currently planning to trade him, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.

Jones, who is present in Green Bay for the start of minicamp Tuesday, skipped all of voluntary OTAs in an effort to force a trade.

The Packers are in no hurry to deal away their third-year safety, even after signing Adrian Amos in free agency and using a first-round pick on Darnell Savage this offseason. Jones was unhappy with his playing time last season and likely wouldn’t have a chance to start at safety in Mike Pettine’s defense in 2019.

A second-round pick of the Packers in 2017, Jones is under contract this season at a cap hit of $1,154,567, including a base salary of just under $850,000.

Although Jones may want a fresh start elsewhere, he lacks the leverage to force a trade and is contractually tied to the Packers at a reasonable rate over the next two seasons.

Jones is present but not participating at practice Tuesday. He would have been subject to team-imposed fines had he skipped any days of the mandatory minicamp.
