The Green Bay Packers are already working the phones attempting to find a potential trade partner for Thursday night’s first round.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Packers are among the teams making “some noise” about trading up in the first round.
Earlier this week, GM Brian Gutekunst confirmed he was planning to be “aggressive” moving around the board, with preparations being made for scenarios to move both up and down the board.
The Packers hold 10 picks in the 2020 draft, including seven on Day 3 of the draft. Although a trade down from No. 30 overall could net the Packers extra draft capital in the middle rounds, a trade up would make sense if the Packers want to target a specific player and don’t care about losing mid-round assets.
The Packers currently have one pick each in the first five rounds and five total in the sixth and seventh rounds.
Gutekunst, who was hired as Packers GM in 2018, has traded up during each of the last two first rounds. He moved up to get cornerback Jaire Alexander in 2018 and safety Darnell Savage in 2019. Both times, he dealt with the Seattle Seahawks, who currently hold the 27th overall pick and could be ideal trade partners for Green Bay once again.
If the Packers stay put at No. 30, they won’t pick until late Thursday night. But all indications are pointing to Gutekunst making a move, potentially even up the board, in the first round.
