Report: Packers host visit for Giants S Curtis Riley, deal unlikely

The Green Bay Packers hosted free agent safety Curtis Riley on a visit Monday but the two sides failed to agree on a deal, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Silverstein reports the Packers and Riley will “seek other options,” suggesting a deal is unlikely.

Riley, a converted cornerback, started all 16 games for the Giants at safety last season, tallying 75 tackles, five pass breakups and four interceptions.

While often terrific in coverage, Riley struggled as a tackler, finishing last in tackling efficiency among full-time NFL safeties last season, according to Pro Football Focus.

Riley went undrafted out of Fresno State in 2015. He was with the Tennessee Titans for three seasons before landing in New York in 2018.

The Packers’ interest in Riley underlines GM Brian Gutekunst’s desire to improve at safety this offseason. He already signed Adrian Amos to a four-year, $36 million deal during the first week of free agency. Mike Pettine’s defense could still use another starting-caliber player at the position, especially one with free safety capabilities.

Several veteran safeties remain available in free agency, including Tre Boston and Eric Berry. The Packers also have 10 picks in the draft.
