Report: Packers host S Jalen Thompson for interviews, testing ahead of supplemental draft

The Green Bay Packers are making sure the team acquires all available information on Washington State safety Jalen Thompson ahead of Wednesday’s supplemental draft.

According to Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst, the Packers flew Thompson to Green Bay to conduct interviews and gather more medical information following Monday’s pro day workout in Los Angeles.

Pauline reported Monday that the Packers were one of the teams most interested in Thompson, who started 39 games over the last three seasons at Washington State. He entered the supplemental draft after the NCAA ruled him ineligible for the 2019 college football season.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic believes Thompson (5-10, 186) has the athleticism, toughness and man-to-man coverage ability to be a future starter as a nickel cornerback or safety in the NFL. He projects it will take a third- or fourth-round pick to acquire Thompson in the supplemental draft.

It’s increasingly possible that GM Brian Gutekunst and the Packers will submit a bid for Thompson on Wednesday. If the Packers are awarded the player, they would forfeit the corresponding draft pick in next year’s draft.

The Packers could use more depth at safety, even after using a first-round pick on Darnell Savage. Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine might like having another versatile, hybrid defensive back like Thompson on the roster.
