The buzz keeps building between the Green Bay Packers and quarterback prospect James Morgan.
According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Packers are one of several teams doing “extra homework” on the Florida International passer and Green Bay native.
Several other media outlets have previously reported on the Packers’ interest in Morgan, who played high school football in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin. Kalyn Kahler of Sports Illustrated listed the Packers as one of the teams showing “significant interest” in the fast-rising quarterback.
Morgan (6-2, 229) is considered a tough and strong-armed quarterback who has dealt with some accuracy issues and needs considerable development at the next level.
Morgan began his college career at Bowling Green but eventually transferred to FIU. He started two years there, throwing 40 touchdown passes and only 12 interceptions, including a school-record 26 scores in 2018.
According to Lance Zierlein of NFL.com, Morgan possesses “major league arm talent” but also lacks “functional ball placement” and “pocket mobility,” likely limiting his potential as a pro.
The Packers could look for a developmental quarterback in this year’s draft to compete with Tim Boyle and Manny Wilkins for a backup job behind Aaron Rodgers in 2020. If the Packers believe Morgan has the right combination of traits and potential, he could be headed home to Green Bay to start his NFL career by the end of the month.
