Report: Packers attempted to trade for new Vikings K Kaare Vedvik

The Green Bay Packers were among three others teams that unsuccessfully attempted to trade for former Baltimore Ravens kicker Kaare Vedvik, who ended up going to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick, according to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

The Chicago Bears and New York Jets were also interested.

Vedvik, a native of Norway, made all four field goals – including a 55-yarder – and two extra points, averaged 55.5 yards on two punts and handled six kickoffs during Baltimore’s preseason opener. He’s made 12-of-13 field goal attempts over the last two preseasons.

The Ravens already have All-Pro kicker Justin Tucker, which made Vedvik expendable.

The Vikings clearly made the best trade offer.

The Packers currently have a kicking competition going between veteran Mason Crosby, who turns 35 next month, and Sam Ficken, who has only attempted six career field goals.

Interest in acquiring Vedvik could suggest the Packers are ready to move on Crosby or are unhappy with the competition being provided by Ficken.
