Report: Over 20 Chiefs players, staffers nearly exposed to COVID-19 by barber

Two Kansas City Chiefs players remain on the reserve/COVID-19 list as the result of close contact with a positive case, but it could have been many more per a new report.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, over 20 Chiefs players and staffers were scheduled to have their hair cut by a barber. That barber reportedly tested negative for COVID-19 five days prior, but his rapid PCR test came back positive for COVID-19 as he was mid-haircut with backup center Daniel Kilgore.

One of the players who was scheduled to get his hair cut by this barber following Demarcus Robinson and Kilgore was Chiefs starting QB Patrick Mahomes per Schefter.

Talk about a close shave. The team acted swiftly and pulled the barber mid-haircut once the test results came back positive. That likely saved them the massive headache of having a number of players stuck in the COVID-19 protocols waiting to be cleared and unable to practice ahead of Super Bowl LV.

Instead, the Chiefs only have two players on the COVID-19 list. Robinson confirmed on Instagram recently that he has not tested positive for the virus and is tracking to be back at practice by Friday. If everything goes well, the same could be true of Kilgore, who Schefter also reports has tested negative for the virus.

Despite the snafu, the idea here by the Chiefs was a smart one. The team would bring in a barber and get him tested, instead of having every member of the team go to their own respective hairstylists, minimizing the risk of COVID-19 exposure. Everyone wants to look good for a full week of media availability, after all. As it turns out, the plan wasn’t as airtight as the team had hoped. Thankfully, it seems they’ve avoided serious exposure and everyone will be good to go for Super Bowl LV.
