Report of man 'with machete' near Sefton Park leads to armed police response

Large numbers of police swooped on Sefton Park this afternoon after reports of a man, possibly armed with a machete, making verbal threats.

Emergency vehicles blocked and cordoned off the junction of Ullet Road and Aigburth Drive after receiving the reports at around 2pm today.

A 29-year-old man was arrested and taken into custody for questioning.

A Merseyside police spokesperson said: "At 2pm, a member of the public reported a man on Ullet Road had made verbal threats.

"There was also an unconfirmed suggestion he may have been carrying a machete.

"Officers attended and the man was detained at the junction of Ullet Road and Aigburth Drive. No weapon was found.

"A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour.

"He has been taken into custody for questioning."
