Report: No evidence linking Patriots football staff to Bengals tape

A new report suggests the investigation into the New England Patriots over the taping incident involving the Cincinnati Bengals is nearly done.

And per that report, no link has been found connecting Bill Belichick and the Patriots’ football operations to the media department responsible for the error.

Per Mark Maske of the Washington Post:

The league’s investigation of the latest video incident involving the Patriots is winding down and could be completed as soon as this week, according to those people. They said it remains likely at this point, barring the last-minute uncovering of more damaging evidence, that the NFL will impose penalties consistent with those handed out in recent years in other cases of game-day infractions.

Barring an unforeseen development in the late stages of this case, it sounds like the investigation hasn’t unearthed anything that hints at the Patriots behaving in a way to get a competitive advantage here.

Even so, a massive financial fine will result from the gaffe. The “when” remains to be seen because the league has to receive the findings, then dole out punishment.

Bengals brass was reportedly furious over the incident and wanted the Patriots punished.
