Report: Nick Bosa diagnosed with ankle sprain

The 49ers avoided a catastrophe Wednesday. An MRI revealed rookie defensive end Nick Bosa has an ankle sprain according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapaport.

Bosa exited Wednesday’s practice early after he went down following a running play. Trainers tended to his lower right leg before he walked slowly off the field under his own power according to reports.

This isn’t great news, but it certainly could’ve been worse for San Francisco and the No. 2 overall pick. There’s no timetable for his return. The team’s training staff has been extremely cautious with injuries this offseason though and Bosa’s been good enough in camp that he should be able to miss significant preseason time and still hit the ground running when the team opens their regular season on Sept. 8 in Tampa Bay.

Rapoport also reported veteran cornerback Jason Verrett suffered a mild ankle sprain. The sixth-year corner also left Wednesday’s session early. He’s returning from a torn Achilles last June and was still working slowly up to a full workload. Expect him to be eased very cautiously back into the fold after some time off as well.
