NFL reinstating Patriots WR Josh Gordon from indefinite suspension

The NFL is reinstating New England Patriots wide receiver Josh Gordon from an indefinite suspension handed down last season.

New England has been dealing with a depleted receiving corps and desperately needed help before the start of the season. The only locks to make the roster are Julian Edelman and N’Keal Harry, with the rest of the receivers fighting for a spot.

Gordon’s return will provide Tom Brady with a legitimate deep threat who has also earned his trust. Gordon had 40 receptions, 720 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 11 games last season after the Patriots acquired him from the Cleveland Browns in a September trade.

The timing of the reinstatement was impeccable for New England, and now Gordon will have to prove that he can remain on the field. In the meantime, he will not be able to play in the Patriots’ third preseason game, which is generally considered to be a dress rehearsal as teams prepare for Week 1.
