Report: NFL Opt-out deadline set for Thursday Aug 6

One of the things the NFLPA fought for when setting up these COVID-19 rules and protocols was an opt-out for players who had circumstances that would put themselves or their loved ones at greater risk or even players who are not but don’t feel comfortable playing. According to ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter, the deadline for players to exercise this option is this Thursday, August 3.

The way the opt-out works is in two tiers. If you are not high risk and simply want do not want to put your self at risk, you are given a $150,000 advance on your 2021 salary paid immediately.

If you do fall into a high-risk category, you can get paid a $350,000 payment which is not an advance on next year’s salary. Athletes in the high-risk category typically opt-out due to circumstances with their family.

So far, the Pittsburgh Steelers have not had any players opt-out. In addition, no undrafted free agent from this class is eligible for this program.
