Report: NFL, NFLPA investigating Titans’ handling of COVID-19 protocols

The Tennessee Titans have had a total of 20 members of their organization test positive for COVID-19 since September 24, 18 of which have occurred in the past week in what is the first outbreak of the virus for a team during the 2020 NFL season.

As a result, the NFL and NFLPA are investigating whether or not the Titans violated COVID-19 protocols, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Schefter says one source tells him that the Titans’ outbreak “isn’t a failure of the protocols; it is a failure to follow the protocols.”

The investigation has been ongoing since Friday, and the NFL and NFLPA are asking the Titans for multiple videotapes of team activities in order to better understand what might have caused the outbreak to start.

Tennessee received two more positive COVID-19 test results on Sunday, and it marks the sixth straight day that the team has received at least one.

The Titans would need consecutive days of negative tests in order to re-open their facility, and as Schefter notes, the earliest that can happen is Wednesday if Tennessee sees no more positive results on Monday and Tuesday.

As of right now, it appears the Week 5 game against the Buffalo Bills is in jeopardy. The outbreak has already led to the postponement of the Week 4 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which has been rescheduled to Week 7.
