Report: New York Knicks ‘not married’ to taking point guard in 2020 NBA Draft

While the only real reports to come from the Knicks in the pre-draft process have focused on LaMelo Ball and how highly the franchise views him, they may not yet be committed to him as their pick. In fact, they may not even be committed to the point guard.

With only RJ Barrett and Mitchell Robinson having solidified themselves as members of the Knicks’ core moving forward, any number of options could be open to the team in the draft.

A recent report from Knicks Film School indicated that the team might not set on taking a point guard.

“From everything I’ve been told, the Knicks aren’t remotely married to the idea of taking a point guard with the eighth pick. As I’ve said a few times here, I think they’re targeting someone who they think can add shooting to their team first and foremost. Whether that’s a point guard like Cole (Anthony) or Kira (Lewis Jr.) – two names I’ve heard they’re currently exploring deeper – or (Devin Vassell) or Obi (Toppin) (ditto), I think that’ll depend on how the draft shakes out.”

The Knicks do find themselves in a position where they could select a host of different types of players. While they’ve certainly made it known they’re considering moving up in the draft for Ball, any combination of non-point guard players like Obi Toppin, Deni Avdija, Devin Vassell, Isaac Okoro, Saddiq Bey, Aaron Nesmith and others would be available.

Realistically given the current state of their rebuild, it would make the most sense for the Knicks to hold pat at the No. 8 slot and select who they feel to be the best player available. But the Knicks have rarely made the wise decision in recent years, meaning a trade to move up in the draft to select Ball is likely on the table.
