Report: Miami Dolphins tried to trade for Matthew Stafford in 2018

A report from Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald indicates the Dolphins made an effort to trade for Detroit Lions starting QB Matthew Stafford in the offseason leading into the 2018 NFL Draft.

Salguero, citing unnamed sources, reports then-Dolphins head coach Adam Gase reached out to Lions coach Matt Patricia, an old friend, inquiring about acquiring Stafford.

“Gase and Patricia are friends and the Lions coach was new to the Lions at the time and considering all options on how to improve his new team,” Salguero notes.

However, the remainder of the speculation here throws cold water on any sparks that might fly with the sensational headline. Read the first line carefully here:

Although it’s not believed the talks reached a point where the Dolphins were asked what they were willing to give for Stafford, it is believed Gase would have offered at minimum Miami’s 2018 first-round pick and probably more.

Again, read the first line slowly…

The talks did not reach a point where the Lions even asked for any offer for Stafford. The Lions organization, and Patricia in particular, decided any possible move on Stafford was not worthwhile.
