Report: Matthew Stafford’s issue is his back, not his hip

Matthew Stafford was a surprise addition to the Detroit Lions injury report on Friday. The iron man quarterback was unlimited through the practice sessions until Friday.

Now he’s questionable for the Week 4 visit from the mighty Kansas City Chiefs with an injury listed as a hip.

Shortly after the injury report came out, I spoke with MLive’s Ben Raven on the Big Drew and Jim show (I’m the regular guest host) on ESPN 96.1 and Raven indicated he had not seen any issue at all with Stafford earlier on Friday.

It turns out the hip might be a misnomer. From ESPN’s Lions beat writer, Michael Rothstein,

A source told ESPN’s Dan Graziano that Stafford’s issue is actually with his back; he has had problems with it in the past and it flared up again this week. The feeling is that Stafford likely will play Sunday, the source said, but the Lions plan to continue to monitor and examine him more over the weekend.

Raven and another source inside the Lions building on Friday both indicated to me they would be very surprised if Stafford does not play against the Chiefs. However, the ESPN report of the back being an issue is more concerning from a performance potential standpoint.
