Report: Matthew Stafford didn’t want to be traded to Washington; had sights set on LA Rams

There was a sense of disappointment for many fans of the Washington Football Team over the weekend when we found out that former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was being traded to the Los Angeles Rams rather than becoming available for Ron Rivera and Co. to make a deal for.

In the days since, though, it has become clear that Stafford never wanted to go anywhere but LA so he could play with Sean McVay, which ended up being enough to convince LAR to get a deal done by sending some extra capital in the trade.

“The Lions were trying to work with Matthew Stafford,” Schefter said Monday, via NBC Sports Washington. “Matthew Stafford wanted to go to the Los Angeles Rams, that became his No. 1 destination.”

A number of teams were reportedly in the running for Stafford, and Washington was at one point thought to be a front-runner, having offered a first and third-round pick for the veteran QB. But it didn’t matter much in the end.

“He didn’t want to go to Carolina, he didn’t want to go to Denver, he didn’t want to go to Washington, he didn’t want to go to Chicago, Schefter said. “Nothing against any of those franchises, it was the allure of Sean McVay in Los Angeles that made him want to go play there.”

Stafford got his wish, and now he will be in sunny LA looking to make it deep into the playoffs with his new squad. Meanwhile, Washington is still searching for QB ‘X’ with their top option off of the board.
