Report: Matt House expected to leave Kentucky to become linebackers coach for Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are experiencing their own groundhog day situation this February.

Four days ago a report emerged that University of Kentucky defensive coordinator Matt House would join the Chiefs as their linebackers coach. A day later the University of Kentucky announced to their media members that House would be staying in Lexington. That news was accompanied by multiple reports that House wanted to leave to join the Chiefs, but Kentucky dropped out of the contract buyout negotiations. It will cost a total of $150,000 to buyout the remaining year of House’s contract.

Jon Hale of the Louisville Courier-Journal is reporting that House is actually leaving to join the Chiefs, and become their linebackers coach as originally planned. He claims that Kentucky players were informed of House’s decision to leave program on Tuesday morning. It appears that Kentucky officials have re-engaged in negotiations with House and the Chiefs for a contract buyout. The news that Kentucky has already informed players of his decision to leave the program for the Chiefs would suggest there’s an expectation that the buyout gets done this time.

House formerly spent time with Chiefs new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo when he was head coach of the St. Louis Rams. House was the defensive quality control coach and assistant linebackers coach during three seasons with the Rams. Now he’ll join the Chiefs with hopes of improving a linebacker group that had a lackluster 2018 season.
