Report: Lonzo Ball ‘doubtful’ for start of regular season as knee discomfort lingers

Not the news that Bulls fans were hoping to hear with training camp starting at the end of the month.

Reported by ESPN’s Jamal Collier and Ramona Shelburne on Friday, Lonzo Ball is expected to miss training camp and is considered ‘doubtful’ for the start of the 2022-23 regular season.

Collier and Shelburne:

“While a source reiterated Ball’s knee is structurally sound after he underwent arthroscopic surgery on Jan. 28, he continued to experience pain while attempting basketball activities as he spent the summer rehabbing in Los Angeles.

Ball will arrive in Chicago next week to undergo further evaluation by the team, but he is unlikely to participate when the Bulls begin training camp at the end of this month, sources said.”

The Bulls have been extremely vague regarding the status of Ball’s knee. During a NBA Summer League broadcast, Bulls VP Arturas Karnisovas stated that Lonzo was ‘getting better’ but ‘not at the speed’ that the organization would have hoped at this point.

In July, LaVar Ball told David Kaplan of ESPN Chicago that Lonzo’s knee was ‘coming along and he’s going to be ready to go.’

And as recent as Tuesday of this week, K.C. Johnson of NBCS Chicago said on the Bulls Talk Podcast that he had heard ‘more positive than negative’ regarding Lonzo’s knee as of late.

By the looks of the most recent report, Chicago should prepare to be without their starting point guard until further notice.
