Report: Lions will release CB Nevin Lawson

The Detroit Lions are set to release cornerback Nevin Lawson, according to a report from NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.

Lawson was the team’s primary starting CB opposite Darius Slay for the last three seasons. He joined the Lions as a fourth-round pick out of Utah State back in the 2014 NFL Draft and has been a prominent member of the secondary since his second season.

He was due a $1.2 million roster bonus this week. That proved too much for Lions GM Bob Quinn to stomach on a player who has yet to record his first NFL interception.

Lawson was a reliable tackler but failed to make plays on the ball and was often a step late to the party in coverage.

Update: ESPN’s Mike Rothstein has now reported the move as well.
