Lions trade for Browns QB David Blough

The Detroit Lions decided they needed a developmental young quarterback in the system. Dissatisfied with their in-house options, GM Bob Quinn turned to Thursday night’s preseason foe, the Cleveland Browns, for help.

According to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Lions and Browns are swapping 2022 7th round draft picks in exchange for QB David Blough. There will be a condition if the Lions finish with a worse record than the Browns, though that has not been specified.

An undrafted rookie free agent from Purdue, Blough had a strong summer in Cleveland after an impressive turn at the Shrine Game, where the Lions brass first met with him. He’s best known for authoring the Boilermakers’ huge upset win over Ohio State last fall.

Blough completed 25-of-43 preseason pass attempts for 271 yards, with two TDs and two INTs. Both of those INTs came against the Lions on Thursday night. He could not beat out AAF refugee Garrett Gilbert for the No. 3 job but showed enough to create a demand for his services.

The trade was made official by both teams shortly after initial publication here.
