Report: Lions to workout QBs Josh Johnson and Landry Jones on Saturday

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo is reporting that the Detroit Lions will be working out quarterbacks Josh Johnson and Landry Jones on Saturday after reserve Lions quarterback Tom Savage left the preseason opener with an injury.

Savage went down on the eleventh play of Thursday’s scrimmage after his head awkwardly hit the turf while being sacked. The Lions don’t report injuries in the preseason, but Savage has a history of concussions and depending on the severity of his injury, the team may need to prepare for his potential absence.

With the team headed to Houston this week for joint practices, they will need to act quickly if they want to get a new quarterback acclimated before then.

Johnson was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then spent one season in both Cleveland and Cincinnati. Then after a three-year absence from the NFL, he signed with Washington last season. Washington was reportedly interested in re-signing him but he decided to test the market instead. Just over a week ago he worked out for Baltimore and the Ravens offered him a contract but he declined their offer, seeking a more long-term contract.

Jones was drafted by Pittsburgh and played for them through the 2017 season. He didn’t see the field in 2018, then signed with the Oakland Raiders in the spring, but was released during minicamp.
