Report: Lions to waive third-string QB David Blough

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting that the Detroit Lions are waiving quarterback David Blough.

The Lions traded for Blough last offseason at the cut deadline and though he was headed for a third quarterback role, injuries to Matthew Stafford, and then back up Jeff Driskel pushed Blough into the starting lineup for the Thanksgiving game. In the five games Blough started, he threw for 984 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions.

Most believe Blough has the potential to be a top reserve quarterback in the NFL but he needs more time to develop.

With the current COVID-19, there was a lot of speculation surrounding how many quarterbacks the team would keep on the roster but the Lions apparently felt comfortable only keeping two on the active roster. That likely means Bloucgh is headed for the practice squad — assuming he passes through waivers — and would likely carry one of the Lions protection labels.
