Report: Lions to release Safety Andrew Adams

The cuts have begun.

Dave Birkett of the Free Press is reporting that the Detroit Lions plan to release Safety Andrew Adams.

Adams was signed this past offseason after spending last year with the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With the Bucs, Adams had four interceptions, which caught general manager Bob Quinn’s attention as he was made it a point of seeking out players capable of creating turnovers.

In training camp and the preseason, Adams was as advertised in the playmaking department, routinely getting interceptions — almost on a daily basis. But his aggressiveness to make plays came with a cost and his back-end coverage suffered.

In Game 4 of the preseason, the Lions played him on 89-percent of snaps and used him primarily as a slot safety — previously he played at deep safety — likely giving him a chance to show his versatility. Unfortunately, his opportunity came up short.

This should open the door for Charles Washington or C.J. Moore to make the roster.
