Report: Lions to release former 2nd-round CB Teez Tabor

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting that the Detroit Lions are planning to release former second-round cornerback Teez Tabor.

Tabor largely disappointed over his first two seasons in Detroit, but he had made big strides this past offseason, earning a starting role in the spring and at the beginning of training camp (with Darius Slay holding out). Tabor “became more coachable” and was making strides, looking like a roster lock early in camp.

Then he suffered a leg injury.

Our own Jeff Risdon speculated that this injury could cost Tabor his spot with the organization, as “his lack of availability puts his future with the Lions firmly in doubt.”

Tabor worked hard to return to practice and was finally healthy just four days ago. Being healthy enough to practice but not play in last night’s game was a bad sign for Tabor, and it was apparently too little too late.

It’s worth noting that Tabor does have some practice squad eligibility left, and it’s possible, if he clears waivers, that he could return to the Lions in that capacity. If he returns and continues to develop, he could himself on the active roster once again, as the Lions often promote from within the organization.

Keep an eye on reserve corners Mike Ford and Dee Virgin, whose special teams prowess could earn them the sixth corner role.
