Report: Lions to release 7th round pick PJ Johnson

Dave Birkett of the Free Press is reporting that the Detroit Lions will release seventh-round pick defensive tackle PJ Johnson.

A nose tackle out of Arizona State, Johnson illustrated the positional versatility and first-step quickness to succeed in this defensive scheme, justifying using a late-round draft pick to acquire him. He fell behind early in camp and faced competition from several prospects that the Lions brought in after drafting him.

Even with Damon Harrison holding out and depth injuries to Darius Kilgo — who eventually landed on injured reserve — and John Atkins — last years reserve nose tackle — Johnson was still not starting and was passed by undrafted nose tackle Fred Jones on the depth chart.

As the offseason rolled on though, Johnson began to show developmental progress and finished the last game on the preseason on a positive note.

When practice squads are developed — and assuming he clears waivers — expect Johnson to return to Detroit, as he is just beginning to tap his potential and is worth developing.
