Report: Lions sign Okwara to a 2-year deal

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting that the Detroit Lions are re-signing defensive end Romeo Okwara to a 2-year deal, locking up a key piece on their defensive line.

The Lions acquired Okwara off waivers and he went on to average 72.5-percent of Lions defensive snaps in 2018, taking over starting duties for oft-injured Ezekiel Ansah and had a career year racking up 7.5 sacks, eight tackle for losses and 14 quarterback hits.

Pelissero is reporting that Okwara’s contract is more than the 2nd-round tender the Lions were expected to place on him, meaning that his contract (before incentives) should be a minimum of $2,900,000.

Keeping Okwara is a key piece for the Lions stability on the defensive line but it’s also clear that they still need to add more depth to the position and give him help on the edge.
