Report: Lions hire Ben Johnson as offensive quality control coach

The Detroit News’ Justin Rogers has reported that the Lions have hired Ben Johnson as their offensive quality control coach, replacing Brian Picucci, who was hired for the same position in February of 2018 as part of coach Matt Patricia’s initial hires.

The team has yet to confirm this hire, but they have already made the change on the coaching roster page of their website.

Johnson walked on at North Carolina in 2004 where he played quarterback for four seasons before beginning his coaching career in 2009 at Boston College. After three seasons with the BC Eagles, Johnson took a position with the Miami Dolphins as an offensive assistant in 2012.

While with the Dolphins, Johnson was promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2013 and 2014, coaching under Zac Taylor, the current head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals. In 2015, he was both the assistant quarterback and assistant tight ends coach. In 2016, he shifted to assistant wide receivers coach, where he stayed until 2018 when he was promoted again, this time to wide receivers coach.

As an offensive quality control coach with the Lions, Johnson will be primarily tasked with preparing opponent scouting reports and statistical analysis on a weekly basis.
