Report: Knicks could make a play for DeMarcus Cousins

With NBA free agency just a few days away, reports continue to emerge about where free agents from the Golden State Warriors might land. After many swirling reports about Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson this week, the spotlight is now put on the prospects for center DeMarcus Cousins’ 2019-20 NBA season.

Cousins, who said after the season that he learned a lot about the game, the business of the game and himself during his stint with the Warriors, has been mentioned in reports about the New York Knicks’ plans for rebuilding their roster through free agency.

Now, Marc Stein of The New York Times reports key pieces of information involving two Warriors’ free agents: 1) Kevin Durant remains the top target for the Knicks; and 2) If they can’t get Durant, the Knicks are leaning toward “extending a considerable one-year offer” to Cousins.

It is unclear if other teams have expressed interest in Cousins. If a hefty one-year contract is all he can get in free agency, hopefully Durant will sign elsewhere to allow him to have that. After all, Cousins is younger than Durant and showed promise before going down with a quad injury in the second game of the postseason.

Upon return to game action, Cousins had big moments for the Warriors in the Finals. Thus, Cousins appears to be one proper offseason away from reclaiming a solid career that should be worth more than a one-year deal. Let’s hope he gets it — with the Warriors or elsewhere.
