Report: Kendrick Ray to join Celtics for Summer League

Per Sportando’s Emiliano Carchia, former Maccabi Tel Aviv and Le Mans guard Kendrick Ray will play for the Boston Celtics in the 2019 Summer League circuit.

Ray, who went undrafted in 2017, played for the Utah Jazz in the 2018 Summer League circuit but had an underwhelming performance. The 25-year-old averaged 6.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 0.7 steals per game while shooting just 36.7 percent from the field and 18.8 percent from three.

At 6-foot-2 and 188 pounds, his ability to score inside with consistency was naturally a question but his streaky jump shot didn’t help matters. Nonetheless, Ray may have proved his inefficiency with the Jazz last summer was an aberration.

Shooting 36.4 percent from three in his five-year collegiate career (two seasons at Quinnipiac and two seasons at Kennesaw State with a year of ineligibility in-between), Ray managed to knock down 38.9 percent of his threes in 2017-18 while playing for the BCL’s CEZ Nymburk and 37.9 percent of his threes for Maccabi Tel Aviv and Le Mans last season.

With career-highs of 15.5 points and 2.7 assists at the international level, Ray doesn’t profile as a prolific scorer. However, he has upper-end speed and shooting ability, which could make him an enticing option as a backup-level point guard in the NBA.

The Celtics could find themselves hungry for point guard depth this offseason, so their interest in Ray makes plenty of sense.
