Report: Ken Crawley safe on Saints 53-man roster

The New Orleans Saints auditioned several options to back up starting cornerbacks Marshon Lattimore and Eli Apple this offseason, but they’ll be sticking with backup Ken Crawley. Herbie Teope of The Advocate reported that Crawley’s roster spot is safe ahead of Saturday’s waiver deadline.

Crawley didn’t look much better in preseason than how he performed last year — his poor level of play forced the team’s head, pushing them into trading for Apple — but he remains the only backup candidate in-house with much experience lining up on the outside. P.J. Williams and Patrick Robinson are at their best inside, covering the slot.

The Saints waived veteran corner Kayvon Webster on Friday, who was Crawley’s top competition for a roster spot. They also waived safety Chris Banjo, a defensive back with extensive experience on special teams (an area Crawley has never contributed). Their defensive backfield is beginning to take shape as the Saints continue to trim their roster down from 90 spots to just 53.
