Report: Kansas’s Arterio Morris Arrested on Rape Charge, Dismissed From Team

Kansas men’s basketball guard Arterio Morris has been arrested on a charge of rape, according to Douglas County, Kans., jail records. He also has been dismissed from the Jayhawks program, according to a press release from the Kansas athletic department.

“When we learned of allegations regarding Arterio Morris, he was suspended from the Kansas men’s basketball program. We are now aware he has been arrested and charged, and he was dismissed from the program,” Kansas coach Bill Self said in the release. “As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are not able to comment further at this time.”

On Sept. 15, The Kansas City Star reported that Morris had been suspended from the program and obtained the incident report describing the rape. The report alleged the rape occurred Aug. 26 at McCarthy Hall, which houses Kansas’s basketball players.

Morris played for Texas in 2022–23, appearing in 38 games and averaging 4.6 points. He committed to play for the Jayhawks on April 28 after entering the transfer portal this offseason.

Morris had run into legal trouble with the Longhorns, when he was charged with a Class A misdemeanor assault on an ex-girlfriend months before his freshman season. The case never went to trial, as the ex-girlfriend requested charges be dropped, and Morris pleaded no contest to a lesser charge on Sept. 14.

The Jayhawks open their men’s basketball season on Nov. 6 against North Carolina Central.
