Report: Johnny Manziel signs agreement with AAF

The next step for Johnny Manziel could be taking shape after his decision to sign an AAF player agreement, according to a report.

The wayward quarterback who has washed out of the NFL and CFL, will go through the AAF waiver process, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

San Antonio would have seemed a logical home for the former Heisman Trophy winner out of Texas A&M, who was a first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2014. His stay there lasted until 2015.

After numerous personal issues and problems, Manziel signed with the Hamilton Ti-Cats of the CFL last season. He was subsequently traded tot he Montreal Alouettes. Manziel played in eight games, throwing for 106 passes for 1,290 yards and five TDs.

The time in Montreal did not work out and Manziel was banished when it revealed he contravened” the terms of his CFL contract and would be immediately released by the Alouettes and barred from signing with any team in the CFL.

The AAF is midway through its inaugural season. The league positions itself as developmental. The Memphis Express are currently 1-5 and the Salt Lake Stallions are 2-4, leaving them 1-2 in the league’s waiver process.

The AAF might have been Manziel’s best and only option. The XFL is scheduled to return in 2020 and when announcing the league in January of 2018, Vince McMahon said he did not want any players with a criminal record.

“We are evaluating a player based on many things, including the quality of human being they are,” McMahon said. If you have any sort of criminal record or commit a crime you aren’t playing in this league.”

Manziel pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges in 2013 after being arrested in 2012 and eventually had an assault charge  dropped last year after, as USA TODAY Sports wrote, he “met the terms of a conditional dismissal agreement.” It seems like the former would make him ineligible.
