Report: Jets workout 5 kickers, including Elliott Fry

The Jets held a kicking tryout on Tuesday that included five kickers, according to the New York Daily News’ Manish Mehta.

Elliott Fry, Sam Ficken, Younghoe Koo, Tristan Vizcaino and Greg Joseph all worked out for the Jets on Tuesday as the team attempts to find another kicker. Kaare Vedvik missed an extra point and a 45-yard field-goal attempt on Sunday in the Jets’ 17-16 loss to the Bills, sparking yet another search.

The kicking carousel for New York continues, as the team attempted to move on from the retirement of Chandler Catanzaro with Taylor Bertolet. With Bertolet and Vedvik being more problematic than a solution, the Jets have been left without a suitable kicker for the past three weeks.

Fry was most recently was in training camp with the Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens. He failed to beat out Eddy Pineiro in Chicago and subsequently signed with Baltimore after Vedvik was traded to the Vikings.

Fry played four seasons at South Carolina from 2013-16, and most recently for the Orlando Apollos in the now defunct Alliance of American Football. He converted all 14 field goals he attempted with the Apollos.

Ficken has bounced around with five different NFL teams following a four-year career at Penn State. He signed with the Rams following an injury to Pro Bowl kicker Greg Zuerlein and went 3-6 in his only NFL field-goal attempts.

Koo is a free agent kicker who last played for the Chargers in 2017. He was waived following an 0-4 start in which he missed three field goal attempts, including kicks that would have won the first two games of the season. Aside from a tryout with the Chicago Bears, Koo has not had another NFL opportunity since then.

Koo then signed with the Atlanta Legends of the AAF. He was one of three kickers in the AAF to maintain a perfect record during the short existence of the league.

Vizcaino, a rookie from the University of Washington, was briefly with the Jets in May 2018. He even hit a 61-yard field goal during a minicamp session. This past offseason, Vizcaino signed with the Bengals but could not beat out former Jets kicker Randy Bullock.

Finally, Joseph spent five years at Florida Atlantic, becoming the team’s all-time leader in field goals. Joseph was in camp with Gase’s Miami Dolphins, making all three of his kicks in the preseason before being cut.

Joseph was the Cleveland Browns starting kicker after Week 2 last season. He made 17-20 kicks before being released during final roster cuts again.
