Report: Jets want to retain DE Henry Anderson

With free agency just a couple weeks away, the Jets would like to lock up one of their own before he hits the open market.

According to the Daily News’ Manish Mehta, the Jets are interested in re-signing defensive end Henry Anderson. Mehta added that team officials will meet with Anderson’s representatives this week during the combine.

The 27-year-old pass rusher had a breakout season for the Jets in 2018. He was tied for the team-high in sacks (7) despite only getting three starts. He did play in every game, appearing in 59.7 percent of Gang Green’s defensive snaps. Anderson also added 35 tackles and four pass defenses.

Anderson was acquired by the Jets from the Indianapolis Colts last offseason in exchange for a seventh-round pick. Anderson had a difficult time fitting Indianapolis’ scheme, as the Colts played a 4-3. Anderson is typically a 3-4 player, which is largely part of the reason why he had a career year in 2018.

With the Jets hiring Gregg Williams to be their defensive coordinator, many thought that Anderson would be the odd man out, as Williams has typically used a 4-3 scheme. However, it appears that the Jets will remain in a 3-4 under Williams, leaving the door open for Anderson’s return.

With that being the case, Anderson is a solid piece to have back for next season. However, he can’t be the only pass rusher the Jets add this offseason.
