FLORHAM PARK, N.J. _ Last month, Jets coach Todd Bowles said the Jets' goal was to contend for a Super Bowl in 2017.
Apparently, the plan is to do it without any talented veterans.
The Jets will release or trade wide receiver Eric Decker in the coming days, according to an ESPN report. The news came down just hours after the Jets released veteran linebacker David Harris after the two sides could not reach an agreement on a pay cut.
After the Jets cut Harris, coach Todd Bowles said he wasn't sure if the Jets had also tried to reduce Decker's salary.
"I coach him because he's on the team and Deck is a good player," Bowles said. "I don't deal with the money part of it so I couldn't answer those questions."
By cutting Decker, the Jets will save $7.5 million in cap space. They saved $6.5 million in space by cutting Harris earlier on Tuesday. The Jets have already moved on from veterans Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold and Brandon Marshall this offseason.
Decker is rehabbing from separate surgeries to his hip and shoulder that limited him to only three games in 2016. The 30-year-old was on the field for OTAs on Tuesday, moving smoothly, and had recently ditched the red non-contact jersey, a sign of progress.
But the next game Decker plays will be with another team.
Decker finishes his Jets career with 163 catches, 19 touchdowns and 2,183 yards in 33 games.
