Report: Jets sign former Texans tight end Ryan Griffin

Former Houston Texans tight end Ryan Griffin is getting another shot to play in the NFL.

According to a report from Mike Garafolo, the New York Jets are signing the 29-year-old to provide depth after Chris Herndon was suspended for the first four games.

The former 2013 sixth-round pick from Connecticut was the odd man out after the Texans drafted Kahale Warring in Round 3 of the 2019 NFL draft. It also didn’t help matters that Griffin was arrested for public intoxication in Nashville, Tenn., the site of the draft, within hours after the selection.

Griffin caught 136 passes for 1,491 yards and seven touchdowns in his 77 career games with Houston, 36 of which he started. The 6-6 264-pounder was in some ways just a placeholder atop the tight end depth chart as the Texans selected Jordan Akins in third round and Jordan Thomas in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL draft. The signing of Darren Fells in free agency and the drafting of Warring just further cemented his fate.

In New York, Griffin, playing closer to his hometown of Londonderry, New Hampshire, could find a renaissance season, or he could find just another job that stands between him and the pro athlete-afterlife.
