Jets plan on signing QB David Fales in wake of Trevor Siemian’s injury

The Jets are turning to a quarterback who is familiar with Adam Gase’s offense to replace the injured Trevor Siemian.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the Jets are planning on signing David Fales to serve as Luke Falk’s backup in Week 3 against the Patriots and beyond.

With Sam Darnold dealing with a case of mononucleosis and Siemian heading for season-ending injured reserve, Falk was left as New York’s only healthy quarterback, making the move to go out and get a backup necessary. In doing so, the Jets brought in a player who won’t have to deal with too much of a learning curve once he arrives at team facilities.

Gase coached Fales as the Bears offensive coordinator in 2015. Although he didn’t appear in a game when Gase was Chicago’s play-caller, he learned the intricacies of his offensive scheme.

The two reunited with the Dolphins in 2017, with Fales once again serving as a backup for Gase. He appeared in two games for Miami that season, going 29-43 for 265 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Fales appeared in only one game in 2018 and spent the 2019 preseason with the Lions before being released in late August.

In Fales, the Jets add an experienced player that Gase can trust to take over under center should Falk succumb to injury at any point. New York’s quarterback situation is far from ideal, but the addition of the San Jose State product could prove to be a useful one if he is forced into action.
